Somerset
County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-56-06) (WGCB PA-56-06) (1906) A
single-span Burr arch truss 127' 10" over Laurel Hill Creek. Located:
Bypassed by SR 653, 1.8 miles west of New Lexington, Middlecreek Township,
Pennsylvania. Directions: In New Lexington, Pennsylvania, at
the jct. of SR 281 and SR 653, go west on SR 653 for 1.9 miles to King
Road (a gravel road) on the left. Turn left on King Road, and the
bridge is just to the right and is clearly visible from SR 653. Year
of construction posted on the gable end of the bridge is 1802. This
date is debatable given most of the bridges in this area were not built
until considerable later in the nineteenth century. Another sign
states that the bridge was rebuilt in 1906, and the World Guide to Covered
Bridges lists 1906 as the bridge's construction date. It is covered with vertical
board siding on both the sides and portals and is painted barn red.
Since 1992 efforts have been underway to preserve and restore the bridge.
The structure is currently stabilized with a steel superstructure, with
future plans to restore it. Also known as King Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11,
1980. (Oct 2005) |
