Iron Hill Covered Bridge

(WGN 38-09-12) (WGCB PA-09-12):  (1842)  A single-span Town lattice truss 80' 9" over Pine Run Creek.  Located:  On Old Iron Hill Road at the northwest edge of New Britain, New Britain Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In New Britain, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of US 202 and Keeley Avenue, go northwest on Keeley Avenue; for 0.5 mile to the bridge.  (Keeley Avenue merges with Old Iron Hill Road after approximately 0.25 mile.  Continue straight on Old Iron Hill Road to the bridge.)  There is some controversy as to the bridges name.  The World Guide of Covered Bridges lists the bridges name as Iron Hill.  The Covered Bridges of Pennsylvania book, given out by the state, lists the bridges name as Pine Valley with a alternate of Iron Hill . There is a plaque on the portal indicating the bridges name as "Pine Valley Covered Bridge."  One of the oldest covered bridges in the county and was originally built at a cost of $5,553.00.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments, and has long stone and mortar wing walls capped with concrete.  It has barn red painted vertical boarding on both the sides and portals.  The lower half of the portals and wide vertical splash panels are painted white.   The portal has a angled opening.  The deck consists of crosswise planking and it has a shake roof.  Also known as the Pine Valley Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.  (Jun 2008)
