County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-15-10) (WGCB PA-15-10): (1872; repaired c. 1999)
A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 98' 4" over East Branch
of Brandy Wine Creek. Located: On Harmony
Hill Road (TR 391) between East Bradford and West Bradford Townships.
Directions: In Downingtown, Pennsylvania from the jct. of US Business
30 and US 322, go east on US 322 for approximately 2.3 miles to Harmony
Hill Road where the bridge is visible at the traffic light. However,
you can not cross the bridge because Harmony Hill Road is now one way into
US 322. Continue down US 322 to first traffic light and turn right to a right
on Graphite Mine Road then a right on Harmony Hill Road to the bottom of
the hill and the bridge. Note: Harmony Hill Road is
only one way through the bridge. The bridge was closed in 1999 due
to extensive damage caused by a hurricane when the siding was torn from
the bridge by a large tree that floated downstream. It was
built at a cost of $2,600.00. The bridge has
an interesting step portal and high double Burr arches sandwiching multiple
Kingposts. The structure rests on stone
and mortar abutments and has stone and mortar wing walls, which are coated
with white stucco on the side facing the road. The sides and portals
are covered with white painted clapboard siding. Open under the eves
for ventilation and it has only one window located on the south side. The
floor consists of crosswise planking and it has a shake roof. Also
known as the Gibson's Covered Bridge and the Harmony Hill Covered
Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on December 10, 1980. (Jun 2008) |
