Barronvale Covered Bridge
Somerset County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-56-03)  (WGCB PA-56-03) (1902)  A two-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 162' 1" over Laurel Hill Creek.  Located:  Bypassed by Covered Bridge Road (SR 3014) in Barronvale, Middlecreek Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In New Lexington, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 218 and SR 653, go west on SR 653 for 2 miles to the jct. with Ream Road (SR 3035).  Go north on Ream Road (SR 3035) for 1 mile to a "T" with Covered Bridge Road (SR 3014).  Turn right on Covered Bridge Road (SR 3014) and go 0.1 mile to the bypassed bridge.  The date of construction for this bridge as shown on the name plate is 1830; however, the Statewide Covered Bridge Assessments lists it as 1846, and the World Guide to Covered Bridges states it as 1902.  The  two spans are of different lengths causing the Burr arches to be different heights.  The Burr arch trusses consist of seven ply laminated arches.  The lower half of the sides of the bridge are covered with vertical boards, exposing a portion of the higher Burr arch and the upper half of the multiple Kingpost truss.  The bottom of the bridge's interior is covered with one, eight inch high board.  Vertical boards also cover the portal, a metal roof laid over old shakes and lengthwise deck planking.  The structure rests on cut stone and mortar abutments without wing walls.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1980.    (Oct 2005)
