A Queenpost truss was added to reinforce the Burr Arch in 1937. Sometime
prior to 1975, steel I-beam stringers were added under the bridge allowing
it to handle heavier loads. The bridge was closed in 1980,
because of unsafe conditions. Restoration work was started in 1981,
to further strengthen the bridge by repairing the stone abutments,
approaches and the installation of a new floor. At some point the
bridges original gables were removed. They were re-installed in 2002.
It has a ten-panel multiple Kingpost truss encased between Burr Arches,
with the Queenpost truss added in 1937. Both the interior and exterior
surfaces were painted brown in 1981. Currently the portal on
the Baltimore County side is painted white. The sides and portals are covered
with vertical boarding. It has a deck of crosswise planks and is
covered with a asphalt shingled roof. The bridge is still open to
motorized traffic and is the only covered bridge in Maryland that joins
two counties. The World Guide Number list the bridges name
as Jerico Covered Bridge. Also known as the Jericho Road
Covered Bridge Bridge. It was listed on the National Register
of Historic Places on September 13, 1978. (Jun 2008) |
