In Fair Hill, Maryland on Tawes Drive. Directions: From Fair
Hall, Maryland at the intersection of SR 213 and SR 273, go north on SR
273 to Training Center Road at Fair Hill Training Center, on the right.
Follow winding Training Center Road 1.8 miles to Tawes Drive, on the left
(Sign to Nature Center and Covered Bridge); follow 1.2 miles to the bridge.
There is a large parking area is on the left. Built at a cost of
$1,165. At 16' wide, it shares, with the Roddy Road Covered Bridge(WGN
10-10-02) in Frederick County, the
distinction of being the narrowest authentic Historic Covered Bridge in
Maryland. The bridge has a six-panel, single-post, multiple Kingpost
truss, sandwiched between double, segmented, half-height Burr Arches.
The structure rests on stone abutments capped with concrete. The
sides and portals are covered with barn red painted vertical boarding,
open under the eaves for ventilation. It is decked with runners laid
over crosswise planking and is covered with a wood shake roof. Also
known as the
Big Elk Covered Bridge, the Dupont Covered Bridge,
the
Hills Fording Covered Bridge and the Strahorn's Mill Covered
